I had mine done July 21st. I’m doing fantastic. Make sure you stay on top of your pain meds for the first 3 days. On the 4th day zero pain for the rest of the healing process. The hardest was having that huge cast on for 2 weeks . Use a knee scooter to get around. I’m 69 and living alone I had no issues what so ever. I went into a surgical shoe instead of a boot . So happy it’s over it was worth it. I was even able to get a pair of regular shoes on today. I didn’t walk in them though . I’m still using the surgical shoe. Most people used ice packs a lot I didn’t . I did keep it elevated. I started driving after I got the cast off with no issues. You’re not supposed to but I did. I have no pain and walk normal with no limp. I had a great surgeon. Best wishes and you’re going to do great!!!

Hi guys, I've got my bunion surgery coming up on the 25th of September.
Hi guys, I've got my bunion surgery coming up on the 25th of September. I'll be honest with you, I'm a tad nervous. Ok, I'm terrified. I made the mistake of looking at a surgery video on Youtube a few months back and I'm not looking forward to this. What's worse is that after one foot, it'll be the other one (once this first one recovers). I'm not sure if I should read up about it anymore. Any advice or suggestions from those of you who have already had it?

I had my bunion surgery April 6. I’m 46 and in good shape. I’m having a difficult time walking without pain or discomfort especially without shoes on. I go to physical therapy twice a week. I walk with a slight gait issue still. I’ve torn my ACL skiing 6 years ago and that recovery and surgery to me was a lot easier/quicker. My advice is to be patient and don’t have expectations of a quick recovery and you’ll be fine. The worst that could happen is you heal faster than the 1 year they say it takes for total relief.
I had mine Wednesday. So far very little pain but only after fixing dinner last night. I had minimally invasive bunion surgery, two bone spurs removed and tendons cut. I’m keeping it elevated and icing 20 minutes every hour Btw I was pretty scared but it went great
I too was extremely nervous. What helped me was planning and preparing. There will always be something unforeseen but if I can try and set my self up for success I usually feel stronger going into it. What preparations have you taken so far?
I just had mine yesterday. Day 1 after surgery and it sucks but its only short term. I have 4 screws and wiring. So it just depends on your pain tolerance
Following, mine is 10/23. I'm having Lapiplasty. There's so many different types!
What specific surgery are you having?
I will be 2 years post op on the 18th, my advice take one day at a time, be patience with yourself, and be kind .The first three days were the hardest but take your pain meds even though you don’t feel anything as once the nerve block wears off you might have pain.. I had major work on my foot so it was painful, but once you get pass the first week it will be better.. Elevate 24/7 with an elevation pillow, get up move around every 1/2 go for a few minutes. I did sponge baths for the first week as my bath tub/ shower set up was difficult but felt good the following week.. I washed my hair under the sink as I had a great walker with a stool and good brakes .My house was full of stairs but once I made it up there to our bedroom I stayed for a week as bathroom was right there .. I had a great hubby who brought all my meals to me .. Just allow yourself to feel all the emotions.. it’s hard doing everything on one leg .. good luck you will do great ..
You will be fine honestly. I put mine off for 30yrs! It's the best thing ever did. Minimal pain. Just take your meds and listen to your surgeons advice as everyone's feet and procedures are different. The only problem I had was having to stay home for so long with my foot elevated. Keep your mind busy. All the best. I'm having my right foot done in two weeks. I can't wait!
Of all the surgeries I’ve had, this has been the easiest recovery that I’ve had, with the least pain. It’s more inconvenient than anything else - the boot is on my right foot, so I can’t drive and I’m stuck at home. Have you had surgery before, or will this be your first one,
that's interesting you didn't ice. I asked my surgeon about icing and he said you can try but it's not part of what he recommends ... Have lurked this page for years and everyone says keep icing !! (Was to have bilateral early this week, got a sinus infection, now waiting another month for surgery)
that sounds reassuring. Thank you for the detailed description of your experience. I have been told I’ll be wearing a moon boot and crutches. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly!
Did your surgeon not recommend or say it's up to you re icing ?
I appreciate your post. I’m happy I did it at Day 10, but not exercising (usually at least 90 min cardio daily)is frustrating. In the end I’ll be in better shape for the long run.
wow that sounds intense and I’m sorry to hear that recovery is still happening, but the physical therapy will hopefully make it better soon. Good advice on being patient. Thank you.
I agree. I couldn’t walk far without having severe pain. I couldn’t live the rest of my life taking breaks bc of the pain.
amazing! Congratulations on being on the other side! If you’re fixing dinner already, then u are feeling ok enough to get out of bed right??
mostly just throwing things in a bowl and defrosting my chicken lol
My after X-ray looks good!
my husband has taken a week off work during the days after the surgery. I was going to look into an electric wheelchair as I’ve got two kids and they have school drop offs pick ups, football practise and maybe it would be better to rent one of those. As far as preps that’s all I have!
I did research for a while. I looked at lots of posts here to get ideas from others. Some things I personally recommend: Knee scooter and crutches kept in strategic places (my scooter couldn’t go into our toilet room for example, so I kept a crutch in there. ) Elevated leg pillow (the 2 leg one) Shower chair. (If you have a movable shower wand get a new sticky holder for it and place it lower than the original one) Lots of ice packs. Surgery pants- or tear away pants. Waterproof sock sleeve thing for when you are able to shower. Also the day before your surgery remove ALL obstacles, rugs, etc. just think through how you’re going to safely navigate your home.
I have 3 screws and a triangle piece of hardware on the top of my foot. I had a pin in but that was taken out last week .
yes it’s short term, hopefully in the next few days you will feel better!! Best of luck with the recovery!
its day 2 and the pain is horrible but I actually slept well and skipped a does of pain meds by 2 hours 😂
yes! I have forgotten the name of mine, it might also be a lapiplasty.
I can’t remember the name, maybe a lapiplasty, I will find out when I go for a pre-check up on Tuesday.
WOW gorgeous
I haven't had surgery but would advise you to keep laxatives handy. Painkillers can really slow things down....and that's the last thing you need!
your before and after photo tells me what a massive need you had for the surgery and your message shows me how expertly you and your hubby handled it. Thank you for sharing. Congratulations and thanks for the advice/suggestions.
Awww good luck and thanks for the kind words ❤️
Thx I’m pleased
That’s amazing! How were you managing to walk before surgery, that looks so painful!
Actually the only pain I had was ball of foot pain, the bunion didn’t bother me it was my second toe and underneath that caused the worst pain .. I didn’t really realize how bad it was but surgeon said now is the time period .. he called my foot floppy.
, Same. I haven’t had other surgeries but this one was easy. I was cleared to drive by week 4 and I’m now on week 12 and on the mend.
ahh thank you for saying that. I have had surgery before, to remove my right adrenal gland as I had Cushing’s Syndrome. So I’ve been under GA before but I’ve not had someone cut into my foot bones. I’ll keep in mind what you’ve said about the boot. Thank you!
what type did you have, minimal invasive, mptj fusikn or other
That’s great. I’m at week 3 and bumming rides everywhere like an old hippy.
