I had bunion surgery on both my feet over a year ago. Doc said it was the worst he had seen in a long time and put in screws and plates and indicated that it had been major surgery. I had physio for a while. My feet still hurt daily and I am limited as to how far I can walk before the pain is unbearable. Walking on uneven surfaces like rocky areas are just torture. Feet still swell occasionally. I have had screws and plates removed. I have tried so many kinds of shoes and find that slip on sketches are the most comfortable. My question is will the pain ever go away and will I be able to e.g. go for a proper hike again?

I had bunion surgery just on my right foot 2 years ago. My pain never went away. I was in pain for 2 years due to the hardware in my foot. I finally got my hardware removed June of this year. It’s been 3 months today since my surgery. I have been pain free ever since. So for me the pain never went away when I had my bunion surgery it just made it worse
I had one foot done and I'm an avid walker. It takes a good 3 years for bone to heal. Not to scare you, but IMO it's a long journey. The key is good shoes for sure. Try Altra shoes. Pricey but worth it. Every wobbly rock was not fun. I'm just now getting back I to shoes I almost took to Goodwill. I also just wore heels to a wedding. It's been three years!!!! I had to wear a stacked heel, and now I found a new slide on heel. It's just time. Also try to sleep with your feet elevated on a pillow. I did that for 2 years. I hope this helps. It took a year for one of my feet..it was a major surgery as well.. I have a connective tissue disease and I am thinking that it causes the delayed healing
I had major work done too, plates, screws , it took over a year to feel completely comfortable. I had ankle Achilles plus posterior tibilas also to deal with due to being non weight for months and my age , everyday I had to do exercises..I walk twice a day now , gym, weight workouts , it will get better and I don’t know how many pairs of sandals, runners, I bought to find the right fit and comfort lol probably spent over thousand . My second toe is permanently straight doesn’t bend but doesn’t effect my walking . I will be two years post op on the 18th of this month . Recovery takes a long time sometimes especially when you have major work ..sometimes I do feel my big toe or second toe will bump into stuff but no more horrible pain I had walking on the ball of foot .. my bunion didn’t bother me it was my second toe and plantar plate before surgery
Is it a hard surgery to have hardware removed ?

BeautifulLizard354 I am sorry to hear that. Everything I have gone through has made me question my decision to have the op but I literally had no choice. Buying shoes was becoming impossible 😩
I regret having the bunion surgery. I can’t imagine having double foot surgery. As my previous surgeon who did my foot 2 years ago botched it. And it was impossible finding shoes that fit me too

you are welcome. It's a hard time. This surgery was one of the worst things for me as I am extremely active and impatient. I learned patience for sure.
I really appreciate everyone's feedback. I had no idea that the recovery would take this long. The doctor definitely did not prepare me for this.
, did your PTTD completely resolve! I was at least 4 months non weight bearing and developed it. I think I will always have a very functional mild form of it.
It’s comes and go I have to do stretching and calf machine at gym helps 😊
I know , my orthopedic surgeon did not sugar coat my surgery at all which I was grateful and knew just looking at my foot before and now he did a miracle with mine and my family dr said it will be a year too .. I still feel it when it rains or weather changes but it’s not painful …
no. I have had plates and screws removed. Recovery is much quicker than the original surgery.
