I wanted to post an update on my experience with bunion surgery for anyone considering it, hopefully it will provide some optimism! I had lapiplasty on my left foot in August 2024. At six months I had an asymptomatic nonunion aka it felt fine but the bones didn’t appear fused. Also had CT scan to confirm this nonunion. Due to the nonunion I was hesitant about doing my right foot but the pain from the deformity was significant so I had the same procedure on the right foot in October 2025. I had a significantly greater amount of post-operative pain for no known reason and needed much more pain meds on the right foot than I did the left, and I had wound healing issues (dehiscence and took months to completely close) with the biggest incision on the right foot. The wound eventually healed but the scar looks a little weird. However as of yesterday I got these x-rays and both the right foot and the left foot are healed and fused. The left one just took longer I guess. I am pain-free and released from the surgeon’s care unless I have future issues. He said if the hardware ever bothers me he can take it out and the bunion correction will stay due to the bones being fused. It was a long and difficult road over about 20 months but I’m very happy with my results and would do it again if I had to go back in time. I was 33 when I started the process and I wanted to get them fixed while I was still relatively young. I chose this procedure because of the low recurrence rate and because I felt like it addressed the root cause of the deformity. I hope this is helpful for anyone considering it! See less
