Scheduled for surgery on the 13th of July. I’m a bit nervous about being awake during surgery. I’ll be having a nerve block and something to calm my anxiety. How have you gotten through this experience? I’m able to bring earbuds/headphones and my iPhone to help distract me but wondering how it has gone for someone who was also nervous to be awake. Please tell me it wasn’t so bad

I had General Anaesethic. I didn't want to be awake for the procedure.

They used general annastasia so I was completely out. I couldn't do it awake.

General anesthetic. 💯 couldn’t pay me to be sedated. I’d need to be whacked over the head to get me in there🤣🤣 but so many here choose to be awake, and on the plus side you won’t have to deal with nausea or telling the surgeon your deepest, darkest secrets😆😆you’ll be fine, good luck 🥰

Which procedure are you having?

It’s ok just put your headphones in . It goes quick then you can go straight home . If I had the choice again I would choose to be awake .

I had MAC (twilight) anesthesia. I don’t remember anything pass adamantly insisting to be allowed to assist with transferring myself from the recovery bed onto the operating table. They let me do that. Apparently, during the procedure, I was able to verbally respond to staff but I don’t remember anything past the bed/table transfer. Don’t worry. Your surgical team will ensure that you’re relaxed, comfortable and free of pain.

I was awake. I made sure I had a good game on my phone that I could get engrossed in. The surgery passed really quickly. All the best

I had twilight anesthesia, which to me felt the same as general except my throat wasn't sore when I woke up (no need for a breathing tube with twilight) and I wasn' nauseus (differen drugs). Not sure how I'd feel in your situation and kind of surprised (very) that it's done that way, but I can say that I've had a couple of procedures done on my feet (ingrown toenail removal and removal of a deep deep plastic splinter) where they just gave me a lot of local anesthetic and then put a curtain between me and my foot, and I felt absolutely nothing with either one. Anesthetic works great. Nerve block, local, general, twilight- any way about it, it works. You won't feel anything. So you just need to manage your anxiety and the rest will go smoothly. And the're gonna give you somethign for your anxiety as well, so don't let yourself spend much time being worried about this going into it. Trust that you chose a good doctor, and believe in your choice, and just look forward to being on the other side of all this. you can do this. 🙂

I had my foot frozen, that's it.

Same here. I had no desire to spend 45 mins being awake for this. Those who do are made of far sterner stuff than me!

Man I wish I could’ve done it awake! I don’t like anesthesia. With every dental procedure I have I make sure I have my dentist explain every step and what he’s doing so noises and pressure are expected. Idk if that’s something that’ll help you!
