Hi, I'm hoping for some advice. I live in the UK and I hurt my foot at the beginning of June. The pain is around the ball of my foot, it feels like there is a lump there and it's painful to walk on. I have been to my GP, who thinks it maybe a Morton's neuroma and has referred me to hand and foot surgery. I'm not convinced as it is now making my second toe stick up and there is generalised swelling in the area. I'm thinking I may have a hammer toe? There delays in seeing anyone, so any suggestions on how I can self manage my issue would be greatly appreciated as I am awaiting a hip replacement on my other side, so am now lame on both sides! Also does anyone know if it's hand and foot surgery that will help or should I try to be referred elsewhere? Apologies for the long post, but I'm a bit desperate!

The things it could be are plantar plate injury, bursitis, capsulitis. If you can message me your rough location I can provide details of some pods in the UK who can help. As per the earlier comments, I think there is a Plantar plate injury. It is caused by a stiff big toe (Functional Hallux Limitus) that transfers the load wrongly to the second toe. It can be treated as long as the Plantar Plate hasn’t been torn apart. https://youtu.be/nmXfUQkRL38
I am in uk I have bunions plus hammer toe. Ball foot pain swelling at bottom of toe plus ball foot .I have ha d a scan.I have had a orthotic made but made sure you go to a podiatrist not a dr to make one . A dr made my first one and if made my foot worse ,the podiatrist I am seeing is the only person who knows what he is doing
Go see a good Podiatrist.
I have been told not to have a operation it could make it worse. Keep foot up as much as possible Ice it then put a heat on it hope this helps
I am a horse rider and currently diagnosed with a Morton’s Neuroma in the ball of my foot between my 3rd and 4th toe. Feels like a sharp rock in that spot. Horse riding shoes/boots are narrow, plus the pressure of the stirrup is what i think caused my nerve impingement. I now have to find wide toe box shoes so I can wear toe correctors inside them when I’m active. It was almost immediate relief!! It took two days for the pain to be almost completely gone! The nerve in my foot can no longer handle shoes even slightly narrow. Maybe this is what you have? Bike riders get it too.

I know it's impossible to say without seeing my foot, but does it sound to you that it is a podiatrist I need? I can self refer to podiatry, but as I don't know what I have done, I don't know where to turn!

Sue Fuller seems like you have same injury I do as long as it isn't Morton's neuroma but because you have a hammer toe seems like planter plate tear which causes the hammer toe
I could. What would I need a photo of? The ball of my foot? The toe? Or the top of my foot? I know there is a lot of swelling as my toes touch and my shoes are tight, but it's not as noticeable to the naked eye.
I've just taken this of my two feet (I hope you don't mind) for comparison. It's my left foot that is painful. You can just make out the swelling as my right foot has a dip below the toes

I don't know 😭 The pain is most definitely in the ball of my foot, but there is no numbness/tingling. I've always been into horses so boots were normally on my feet not high heels. My foot aches when I'm not walking although it is worse when I'm walking.
I hurt my foot on 3rd June. I didn't go to the doctor for over a month as I thought it would get better. I had to wait for my x-ray referral, then for my hand and foot referral Meanwhile I'm lame on my right leg (hip dysplasia) and my left due to my foot. I don't want to wait to see the hand and foot surgeon only to find I need to be referred again, and I would literally try anything to try and make it easier to walk! Including posting on social media! I really appreciate your help 🥰
You have had an x-ray right?
Yes I had an x-ray. It was mainly to rule out a fracture. There is no fracture, just a very slight bunion was noted. So I have been referred to hand and foot surgery under the assumption that I have a Morton's neuroma, which would not show up on x-ray anyway.
