MIS Surgery vs. traditional bunionectomy surgery: Figuring out all of these bunion surgery options can be daunting. Any thoughts, observations or experiences you may have about them are welcome here. I'm still deciding. It's good to read online about the pro's and con's but hearing first hand accounts can be so very helpful. Your input etc. in general?

I have performed over 1500 bunion surgeries in my career minimum and I’ve been doing minimal incision for the last year or so and I would say as long as you have a good surgeon who knows what they’re doing that’s the way to go

I had MIS on my left foot April 2024. Started running 5 miles/day by mid July 2024 and have been very active since then. My right foot started the same progression (bunion site pain, sesamoid pain) so I had another MIS surgery on Monday. Five days in and I’m feeling good. I hate not being able to workout and drive, but overall the pain is very tolerable and I’m heel walking enough to get around the house and walk the dog. Good luck with your decision! I’m very happy with my results 🙂

Peter - In one of my two consults with the surgeon I chose for Dec. surgery, he stated and showed me that I have a plantar tear in the foot along with the bunion issue. The surgeon said he would do an Austin/Keller procedure. The surgeon also showed me on my MRI that I have a tear in the plantar plate.

cont'd. I left there and have since learned that I would have to do an Austin/Keller procedure along with a Weil Osteotomy in one surgery combined to repair the plantar plate tear as well. The surgeon did Not tell me this. I am now seeing that there is an option to do a Lapidus surgery and a Austin/Keller combo at once. And so, I am looking at doing an Austin/Keller procedure and a Lapidus procedure at once to fix the underlying problems.

...really confusing. Does this make any sense? I am now looking into the possible combo of Austin/Keller/Lapidus combo if it exists. Really trying to understand.

I am unsure officially classification but I’d deem it moderate. X-ray results: 3 views of the right foot demonstrate a hallux valgus angle 24 degrees, intermetatarsal angle of 11 degrees.

i’ve never heard of doing an Austin with a Keller. There’s no need to do both. It’s one or the other.

It's all in one combo if you look it up. The Weil Osteotomy is done for a plantar tear fix. The Austin/Keller combo is done as traditional bunion surgery. Also see, Weil Osteotomy for plantar tear and Lapidus (MiS) for bunion. This is what I was told so I looked it up. But I am not not a doctor/surgeon, but was a journalist for many years. So, I am trying to learn so I get it as right as possible the first time.
